The truth is, when we started Kingdom in 2019 we never thought we’d be making pet ingredients. We started the business with the conviction that new ingredients, intentionally designed using natural microbes, could make a real impact in the food industry.
The opportunity in pets wasn’t immediately obvious to us. But over the course of several years and hundreds of conversations with CPG brands later, we began to see just how neglected the pet space really was. We asked pet brand leaders about their innovation plans, their unmet needs, and where ingredients made from natural microbes could help.
What we learned was that for decades, most ingredient companies had designed their ingredients for humans or livestock first, and then cross-sold them into pets. Usually with little scientific justification, and no clinical evidence of actual efficacy in dogs or cats.
By now, the statistics about the humanization of pets and growing spend on them are well-known. But we didn’t set out to build pet ingredients because of statistics. We did it because of what hundreds of conversations with pet brands revealed, long before the statistics caught up.
That pet brands didn’t have great active ingredients to choose from when designing their products. That the options available to them tended to mask problems without addressing root causes. That pet brands knew their products could be better, but didn’t have the science to get there.
We set out to fix that.
At Kingdom, we’ve designed all of our Superculture® ingredients from the ground up for pets. Their specific biology informs every step of our process: from designing high-precision assays to screening thousands of natural microbial strains from our proprietary biobank, combining them to amplify their functionality, and validating them in rigorous clinical trials in pets.
Across our ingredients, we now have 10 clinical studies demonstrating industry-leading results. Our Superculture® ingredients have been clinically shown to drive significant improvements in bad breath, itching, skin and coat quality, stool consistency, and gut health. Most importantly, pet parents can see these changes in just days or weeks.
Those of us who are pet parents know that pets are an integral part of our lives. They express unconditional love, loyalty, and kindness. They appeal to our better natures and inspire us to express these qualities to others. There are many pet parents at Kingdom (myself included), and our pets fill our lives with so much joy that we really couldn’t imagine life without them.

For us, pets have never been an afterthought or a secondary market. We’ve built our ingredients for them, from the ground up, since the beginning.
